    Notes:

    He was one of the first white children born in the area.

    Went to California in 1850 did some mining. Returned home the following spring by way of the Isthmus of Panama.

    Sept. 2 1860 enlisted as a private in the Union army, Company E 9th Indiana Regiment of Infantry and served 3 years. He was taken prisoner in Tennessee and passed through Libby Prison, but was immediately exchanged. He was in the battles of Pittsburg Landing, Stone River, Chickamauga, Lookout Mountain.

    Upon returning from service in the army he was elected Sheriff of Elkhart county and served two years.

    In 1870 he invented a hay hoister and converter.
