Electrical engineer who built radars around the world

Edmond Joseph Violette's (Ed) memorial service will take place on September 25, 2021 outdoors at Greenwood & Myers Mortuary in Boulder. He passed away on August 12, 2021 at the age of 90 in Missoula, Montana. He was the youngest of five children. He had three brothers Sherman, Glenn and Jim and his sister Iris. He married Gloria Johnson in Polson in 1950 starting a 66-year adventure. He moved to Boulder, CO in 1955 and was one of the first engineers hired into the newly built laboratories of the National Bureau of Standards (now NIST). Ed was born in Deer Lodge on September 25, 1930. He spent his youngest years in Deer Lodge and Post Creek, Montana eventually ending up in Polson where he attended high school. He was a dedicated athlete playing football, basketball, track and golf. The rumor was that he never let classes get in the way of a pickup basketball game or an afternoon of golf. When his children got a look at his High School Yearbook, his Senior Picture was accompanied by the notation - "He was rarely found in study hall, but often located in the gym or on the field." He went on to participate in Football and Track at Montana State University and, despite his attention to sports, he graduated with a BS in Electrical Engineering. He served in the Air Force where he applied his degree to research on high-frequency radio communications and the new field of computer-to-computer data transfer. After the Air Force, he applied these skills at the National Bureau of Standards (now NIST). He finished his career with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) overseeing the installation of communications equipment at research stations around the Pacific. He would let his wife (Gloria) and children (Susan, Lynee, Dan and Joseph) know that he was off to some exotic location to help build a NOAA weather station. It might be Peru, Chile, Guam, Fiji, Samoa, the Marshall Islands, or the Aleutians - he was a million-mile frequent flier before that was a thing. After the children had grown, his wife Gloria would often accompany him on these months-long work trips to the far reaches of the Pacific - occasionally living in tents or in the village closest to the research site. He was a lifelong participant in sports - a fast-pitch softball pitcher on a Colorado State Champion team, and he helped organize teams to play football, basketball and softball in city leagues. He started playing tennis in his thirties, and went on to earn top 5 state rankings in the senior divisions. He supported tennis in Boulder serving on the Board of the Boulder Tennis Association, and he was a member of the Rocky Mountain Tennis Center for over 30 years. Upon retirement, he built a summer house on Flathead Lake just outside of Polson, MT doing most of the construction himself. He and Gloria used this house as a base of operations for adventures on the lake and in the mountains with their children and grandchildren. He is survived by daughters Susan and Lynee, and his son Daniel who are grateful for his gracious spirit and his example of a life lived in full.

    Notes:

Gloria Marie Violette was born January 20, 1930 to Carl and Marie Johnson in Polson Montana. The family lived on a small farm a 3 mile walk from the town. She attended Sunny Slope elementary, a one room school with eight grades. She was promoted from the first to third grade based on her reading and spelling skills. At Polson High School she played trombone in the orchestra and marching band and was elected prom queen. Gloria studied Home Economics and Graphic Art at the University of Montana in 1948. She later transferred to Montana State College to pursue an Art Degree. She obtained a teaching certificate from the Montana School of Education in 1950. Her first teaching assignment was at a one room school house teaching 13 students in eight grades in Spring Hill, MT Gloria married Edmond Violette, also a Polson High graduate, in 1950. The first child, Daniel, was born in July 1951 and Lynee was born in April 1953. The family had a three-year stay at Wright Paterson Air Force Base in Dayton, where Ed served as an officer and Gloria kept busy raising the kids and substitute teaching. A visit to Boulder, CO in 1956 made them realize that it was the perfect place to settle down. Ed found work with the National Bureau of Standards (now NIST) as a project engineer. Gloria’s family grew with the addition of Susan in 1958 and Edmond Jr (Joey) in 1964. Gloria attended CU and received her Education Degree in 1964 with a minor in geology. She worked as a substitute teacher throughout the Boulder-Denver area, taught special education in the Boulder Valley School District, and tutored reading challenged students. Gloria loved western music and entertained with a piano, guitar, or banjo. She accompanied her husband to his work sites among Pacific Rim countries such as Guam, Fiji, Saipan Micronesia, as well as on trips to the Caribbean, Mexico, and South America. The scenery provided Gloria with inspiration for her painting. Gloria’s travels also included a trip to her mother’s homeland in Russia in 1980 to visit relatives. Life was forever altered in August 1980 when her 16-year old son, Joey, was lost, in an auto accident. It was a difficult time for her, but she worked her way back with pursuits including painting for pleasure and show, and serving as President of the Boulder Art Association in 1984. She provided encouragement to her children and grandchildren helping them become accomplished in their careers. Through the years she continued her love for all animals and cared for horses as riding companions on the Montana farm. She led an active life as a skier, hiker, tennis player and she played a mean game of ping pong well into her 80’s. She climbed Longs Peak and hiked to the bottom of the Grand Canyon in her 50s. She continued to volunteer with groups like the Therapeutic Horse Riding Program and Homeless and Battered Women’s Shelters. She was active in the Foster Parent Plan program and supported organizations providing educational opportunities in developing countries. She is remembered in life by her husband Edmond, her children Dan, Lynee, and Susan, her grandchildren Jeremy McMillan, Andrew McMillan, Krista McMillan, and Jeffery McMillan, great grandchildren Reggie McMillan and Thomas Richardson; and her siblings Chester Johnson, Lillian Stephenson, Helen McClellan and Gene Johnson, along with many close relatives in Montana. Best of all Gloria has always been known for her quick and pretty smile. Many thanks to Balfour Cherrywood and AGAPE Hospice for making it possible for her to keep that smile. A Memorial service will be held 10:30 A.M. Saturday February 11, 2017 at Crist Mortuary 3395 Penrose Pl., Boulder, CO. Arrangements under the direction of Crist Mortuary, Boulder, CO.

    Notes:

Edmond J. Violette was born in Ladysmith, Wisconsin, in 1885. His parents were John Violette and Anna Berenek. He was the youngest of three children. His brother died when he was six years old and his father when he was fifteen. His two sisters, Virginia Duax and Melvina Hall, lived in Wisconsin and both are dead.
Ed Violette came to Deer Lodge in 1909 when the Milwaukee Railroad was being built, and he worked for the railroad for many years. We met in Deer Lodge when I lived with my family in the McBurney Hotel. We were married in Missoula, Montana in 1910.
I, Mabel E. Barnden, was born in Avon, Montana in 1891, and lived there until 1902, when the family moved to Deer Lodge. I went to schools in Avon and in Deer Lodge, and went to the College of Montana for two years. The College of Montana was one of the early day colleges and was closed down when State Colleges were established. It opened again, as a private school in early 1900. It was the oldest college in Montana and was located in Deer Lodge.
After our marriage we lived for short times in Ponderay, Idaho, Spokane and Lamont Washington. Sherman was born in Lamont in 1911. We moved back to Deer Lodge in 1912, and James, Iris, Glenn and Eddie were born there. All of them went to the Deer Lodge schools, and Sherman and James Graduated from the Deer Lodge High School.
In 1929, the family moved to St. Ignatius and lived on a ranch there. Glenn and Iris graduated from the St. Ignatius High School. Eddie graduated from Polson High School, after our move there in 1940.
Ed died in Polson in 1945. After his death I worked at the Court House, and in 1952, after James Harbert's retirement, I was elected Clerk of the District Court for two terms. I retired in 1959. James Harbert had been Clerk of the Court from the time Lake County was formed.
Our house in Polson was sold in 1959, and I went to California, and lived in Santa Cruz for six years. On a visit with Eddie and family in 1966, in Boulder, Colorado, we looked over the Golden West Manor, apartments for senior citizens, and have lived there ever since, July 1st, 1966.

On his daughter Marguerite's birth certificate his middle name was typed Cronk then crossed out and written in was Conrad. Same document gave his birth place as Adelaide, Australia

    Was a Sheriff

Description: James Conrad Barden's father was James Henry Barnden b. 1833. I believe he died in a mining accident in Australia in 1864. JCB's mother was Margarethe Schimpf b. 1835 in Germany d. 1922 in Avon MT. She remarried a man named Trottmann and that is the name on her grave in Avon MT. JCB was in infant when James Henry died. Margarethe took the baby from Australia back to Germany and then at some point moved to Montana. I also saw a note re: JCB's daughter Mabel (my grandmother) She was indeed the county clerk for many years. However, her husband Edmond worked for the railroad and was not the sheriff. Mabel's father JCB was the one who was the sheriff.
