After continuing his studies through the summers, he earned his Ph.D. in French from the University of Kentucky, Lexington, KY in 1971.
At St. Thomas Seminary, he taught French, English, speech, and art appreciation. He remained at St. Thomas Seminary until it closed in 1970. He came back to Baltimore to St. Mary’s Seminary & University, Liberal Arts College in Catonsville, MD from 1971-1978. There he served as Academic Dean and taught French, speech, and art appreciation. He then went west to St. Patrick’s
College (1978-1982), subsequently called St. Joseph’s College, Mountain View, CA (1982-1990). Again, he served as Academic Dean and taught speech, history, English, theology, art appreciation, and general humanities.
As Academic Dean in both Catonsville and Mountain View, Fr. MacDonough acquired the reputation of being a strong advocate for keeping high academic standards. In his characteristic conscientious manner, he followed through on this goal by the way he showed a special interest in the academic growth of each student.
After St. Joseph’s College was damaged by the 1989 earthquake, and the Sulpicians had no other colleges to which he could be assigned, Fr. MacDonough’s love for seminary formation enabled him to take a position on the faculty of a non-Sulpician seminary, St. John’s Seminary College, Camarillo, CA. He found a new home
in the community of St. John’s Seminary where he lived out his teaching and Sulpician ministry as a full-time faculty member from 1991-2004.
While teaching at St. John’s, he was able to complete two articles on his relative, the early Sulpician missionary Fr. François Ciquard (1754-1824): “The Missionary in Spite of Himself: François Ciquard” and “François Ciquard, S.S.: Missionary to the Maine Indians (1792-94).” In the September, 1999 issue of La Société
historique acadienne: Les Cahiers, he published a lengthy article that became incorporated into his book, The “Apostolic Missionary”: François Ciquard, His Life and Memoirs, (2005). His research and writing combined his three loves: the history of St. Sulpice, French, and the history of Maine.
Fr. MacDonough so loved southern California that he decided to retire there in 2005, but he continued to serve in a part-time position for St. John’s College Seminary as an adjunct spiritual director until 2015, when he brought his ministry as a seminary formator to a close. A serious setback from prostate cancer in the
summer of 2018 brought him back to Catonsville, MD to the Sulpician retirement community, Villa Olier, in September 2018.
While at the Villa, his prostate cancer continued to advance slowly but relentlessly. For as long as he could, he enjoyed contributing to the community life by playing the organ for Mass on occasion and by joining his confreres for the evening socials and a glass of wine. Eventually he became wheelchair-bound and admitted to home hospice at the Villa on September 11, 2019.
Fr. MacDonough died on March 10, 2020 and was buried on
March 14, 2020 in the Sulpician cemetery in Catonsville, MD following the funeral liturgy in the Chapel of Villa Olier. At his Mass of the Resurrection, the Provincial, Very Rev. John C. Kemper, P.S.S. presided, Fr. David Thayer, P.S.S., General Consultor and colleague at both St. Mary’s Liberal Arts College and St. Joseph’s College, Mountain View, CA, preached the homily, and the Director of the Villa, Fr. Dan Doherty, P.S.S. led
the committal service at the graveside.
Fr. MacDonough heard, as did the Psalmist, that the Lord would teach him the way he should go and counsel him lovingly. In the imitation of how the Lord taught and counseled him, so did Fr. MacDonough teach and counsel throughout his Sulpician ministry. Teaching was his frst love. He regretted that he could never use his advanced degrees to teach upper level courses in the college, but he remained deeply committed to the ministry of seminary formation. Those who knew him as a demanding teacher
and wise counselor in those formative years of college hold a special place for Fr. MacDonough in their hearts.

Born October 6, 1918 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Floyd moved with his family to Long Beach, California in 1923 and graduating from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1936. Floyd then went on to graduate with the Class of 1940 at the University of California, Berkeley with an Engineering Degree.

On November 18, 1942 Floyd enlisted in the Army Air Forces. He would later be selected for the B-29 Superfortress program graduating from the Fight Engineer school and commissioned a Second Lieutenant.

Floyd was then transferred to Fairmont Army Air Field located near Geneva, Nebraska. He was assigned as Flight Engineer to the aircraft commander Lt Col Thomas Classen (also squadron commander) crew which was assigned to the 393rd Squadron, 504th Bomb Group a B-29 outfit preparing for deployment to the Pacific. Training was slow going as few B-29s were available for training purposes so B-17s were used initially. Eventually some B-29s arrived with proper training advancing. During training the 393rd Squadron was considered by many to be the best in the group.

Unexpectedly on September 10, 1944 Special Order No. 254 was issued by Fairmont Army Air Field Headquarters. This order detached the 393rd Squadron from the 504th Bomb Group, and transferred all personnel (without equipment) to Wendover Field, Utah without explanation. Unknown to the 393rd cadre the squadron had been selected to become the atomic strike force of the yet to be formed 509th Composite Group.

At Wendover Field the training again got off to a slow start with the lack of B-29 availability. This situation improved rapidly as the first batch of new B-29s arrived for all 15 crews. These B-29s were the first of the Silverplate variant capable of delivering atomic bombs. As a 7,000 lb. weight savings all four gun turrets and their fire control system was removed except for the twin 50 caliber tail guns.

At Wendover Floyd and the Tom Classen crew were designated as Crew A-5 with the same crew that had been formed at Fairmont Field. The training at Wendover, which included several weeks temporary duty in Cuba during January 1945 for over water training, lasted into June 1945. On 19 June 1945 Floyd and the Classen crew A-5 including ground crew departed Wendover Field for their new base of operations at North Field, Tinian, Mariana Islands.

The Silverplate, i.e.(nuclear capable) B-29 assigned to Crew A-5 was 44-27354 (Big Stink), Victor No. 90. After arriving on Tinian on about 24 June 1945, Crew A-5 flew 2 training missions and 2 practice bombing missions with Classen as the Airplane Commander. This crew was also used in 3 Little Boy test missions in July with Tibbets as the Airplane Commander (one mission used 44-27354 and two missions were flown with 44-27303. Crew A-5 was credited with three combat missions, as shown below. 44-27354 was used on each mission except where noted. Classen was the Aircraft Commander on the first two missions; Elbert E. Smith was the Airplane Commander on the third mission.

20 Jul 45 Per Operations Order 20, dropped a pumpkin bomb on the assigned primary
target (the Tsugami-Atagi Manufacturing Company in the Nagaoka area),
using radar bombing. The results were recorded as “unobserved.”

26 Jul 45 Per Operations Order 27, dropped a pumpkin bomb on a target of
opportunity (a copper refinery in the Hitachi area), using visual bombing.
The results were recorded as “good.”

29 Jul 45 Per Operations Order 30, dropped a pumpkin bomb on a secondary target
(an oil refinery in the Wakayama area), using visual bombing. The results
were recorded as “unobserved.” Aircraft 44-27304 was used on this
mission.

Note: Per Operations Order 41, Crew A-5 and its associated ground crew departed Tinian for Wendover on 9 August 1945. Classen was the Airplane Commander and aircraft 44-86346 was used. The purpose of the mission was to be positioned at Wendover if the need arose to transport another Fat Man unit to Tinian.

Floyd made the move to the new home base of the 509th Composite Group at Roswell Army Air Field, New Mexico. He was honorably released from the Army Air Forces December 26, 1945.

After the war Floyd worked for an American firm with postings in Ontario Canada with family for a couple of years and an extended overseas posting later during the 1960's for several years living (with family) in Paris, France.

Floyd died March 2, 1983 survived by his wife Joan(nee Violette) two daughters Susan and Nancy, and a son Paul.

C. Edward "Ed" Keiser

Gorham, ME, On Wednesday August 9, 2017 Ed continued his journey onto our Lord. He passed away quietly, peacefully, at home, in his sleep.

He was the son of Kenneth and Helen (Senft) Keiser. He was born on November 22, 1942 in York County, PA.

Ed grew up in the small town of Jacobus, attended school there. He was in the graduating class of 1960 at Dallastown Area High School. Ed was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving aboard the USS Forrestal during his enlistment. He worked in several York County businesses after his discharge, moving to ME in the mid 1970's. He worked at Holmes Distributors for several years before retiring from the Portland Press Herald – Evening Express – Maine Sunday Telegram in 2001. Semi-retirement brought him to work for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland.

He served both at St. Margaret's in Old Orchard Beach, and Our Lady of Perpetual Help in North Windham until his recent illness. Ed battled pancreatic cancer for more than four years.
He was a member and officer of the Portland Newspaper Guild, member and past President of the Windham/Gorham Rod & Gun Club, member of the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, Gorham member and maintainer, in the Bigelow District, for the Maine Appalachian Club. He volunteered for over twenty years at the Wayside Evening Soup Kitchen, was a regular whole blood donor at the American Red Cross, having donated over a hundred pints, and also was a Minister of the Holy Eucharist at several area parishes.

He is survived by the love of his life, Marcia Hill of Gorham. Also, two sons, David, his wife, Wendy of York, and Jeffrey, of Richmond, VA. Leaving two grandsons, Seth of Minn, MN and Skylar of York; three step-grandchildren; Jeremy of NC, Zackeree and Kyrsten, both of York. Also,

Ed is survived by his brother Joe, his wife, Deb, both of York. Two very special cousins, Gerry, and her husband, Jon Smeigh of Elizabethtown, and Bill Graybill of Reading. Ed was welcomed into the Hill family, as one of their own, when Ed and Marcia were married on Thanksgiving Day 1991. He will be fondly remembered by mother-in-law, Dorothy Hill, of Cumberland Ctr., his many brothers and sisters-in-law, and all nieces and nephews, especially Evelyn and Emilia Viernes of Gorham, ME, who spent most Thursday evenings with Uncle Ed and Aunt Marcia.

During his illness, family members journeyed to Gorham to assist in his care-giving and providing support to Marcia. Their kindness to her, her dedication to him, were an inspiration to him during that time.

Marcia was diligent in maintaining, and a wonderful writer on, the CaringBridge web site. Ed was very appreciative of all the visits, and guestbook entries, by family and friends to the site. It provided a very important link to all those wanting to follow Ed's journey without the thought of being an intrusion into that journey.
