Chairman of the Board of The New Hampshire Telephone Museum, Long-time Warner Resident, and well known and respected business professional died Saturday, September 21 at his home on 29 West Main Street with family members and care givers by his side.
Dick was the former Chairman of MCT Telecom with headquarters in Contoocook, NH. He started as an Installer-Repairman in Warner in April 1946. He retired as President & CEO in August 1987. He resigned as Director and Chairman when the company merged with TDS Telecom in June 2002.
Dick has served the telephone industry in many capacities. He has received many citations and awards from state, regional and national telephone industry associations. He wrote the history of his company – "Merrimack County Telephone Company: The First 100 Years" – published in 1997.
Dick lived in Warner with Alice, his wife of 75 years. Alice died on July 15, 2013. Dick and Alice had four children: David, Paul, Susan, and Joy. He was the son of Cyr and Adeline (Soucie) Violette and grew up in Van Buren, Maine. He graduated from Van Buren Boys' High School in 1934. Besides his parents, he was pre-deceased by his brother Albert Violette, sister Ludovine Scarlato and sister Elmire Michaud, and by a granddaughter Molly Scott.
Active in community affairs, Dick received the Warner Men's Club Community Service Award in 1989 and Citizen of the Year Award in 1996. In March 2002 he was honored in the Warner Annual Town Report. He served over 20 years as a member of the Warner Fire Department, retiring in 1967. He served his country during World War 2 in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater as a Combat Infantryman and came home in February 1946 with the rank of First Sergeant. He later served in the U.S. Army Reserves for 20 years and retired as a Chief Warrant Officer, CWO 4. He was a Life Member of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans. He served in many offices since that time, with over 67 years consecutive membership. In June 2008 he was selected as the NH Legionnaire of the Year by the Legion's Department of NH. He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps in January 1935 and was assigned to the 160th Co. CCC in Greenville, Maine. He was a member of the cadre of 23 young men who came to Warner on June 21, 1935 to open the 1147th Co. CCC. He was clerk-of-the-works during construction of the buildings. In July 1936 he was promoted to Senior Leader and continued in that position until November 1938 when he left to get married. He made Warner his home thereafter. Dick organized the NH Chapter 107, CCC Alumni in 1984 and served as Secretary-Treasurer and Historian. He was also the Curator of the CCC Museum in Bear Brook State Park in Allenstown, NH. He gave many talks about life in the CCC's. Dick always kept a great interest in Van Buren, the town where he grew up. He is a direct descendent of Francois Violette who pioneered the area in 1790 and built the first grist mill there. Dick and Alice were Charter Members of L'Heritage Vivant Association who sponsor the Acadian Village in Van Buren, and have donated several exhibits to the Village.
Dick is survived by sons David and wife Elaine, fulltime RVers formerly based in Wyoming and Arizona; Paul and wife Lisa, Warner NH; and daughters Susan and husband James Milliken, Concord NH; and Joy Violette Wolf and husband Nathan Stein, Black Mountain, NC; ten grandchildren; Marc Violette and wife Debra of Warner; Paula Violette Brown and husband Michael of Warner; Tracy Violette of Enfield CT; Daniel Violette of Portsmouth NH; James Milliken Jr. of Antrim NH; Andrew Milliken and wife Emily of Middletown CT; Joshua Milliken and Joanne Ardinger of Concord NH; Adam Lastra of Black Mountain NC; Bailee Violette and Mickey Violette of Warner; Step-Grandchildren Destry Ogden and wife Rachel, of Portland OR; Shauna Dockter and husband Casey; Shane Ogden and wife Johnna; and John Ogden, all of Green River, WY; and 5 great grandchildren; Lauren Violette of Washington DC; Ryan Violette of Warner; William Chandler of Warner; Olivia Brown of Warner; and Grace Violette Milliken of Concord. Dick is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and their families.
