BANGOR - Joseph O. Violette, 89, passed away peacefully March 18, 2013, surrounded by his family. Joe was born July 8, 1923, in Keegan, to Severin and Marguerite (Martin) Violette. He was one of nine children.
Joe graduated from Van Buren High School in 1943 and then immediately entered the U.S. Army Infantry to serve our country in North Africa, Italy and France, as an anti-tank gun crewman. When he returned to Maine he enrolled in the Bangor School of Commerce, where he graduated with an associate degree in accounting. He later received an honorary Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from Husson College in 1995. Joe began his career at Bangor Roofing as an accountant. From there he worked as the comptroller at Stanley J. Leen Electric, Brewer, until his retirement. Joe was also a business entrepreneur buying, renovating and renting apartment houses and co-owning Dunkin' Donuts franchises in Brunswick, Presque Isle and Bucksport. Joe married Beatrice LeVasseur from Limestone, June 14, 1948. They raised four "awesome" children. He will be remembered for his kind, generous and outgoing nature. He loved to tell jokes, especially "corny" ones, which the family refers to as "Joe jokes." He dedicated his life to providing for his family. He enjoyed playing golf and was a longtime member of Penobscot Valley Country Club. After retiring he and Bea spent many enjoyable winters at their home in Florida. Joe belonged to the Bangor Jaycees, Lion's Club and Knights of Columbus. He initiated St. Mary's St. Matthews Federal Credit Union in 1964 and was president for many years.
Joe is survived by his wife of 64 years, Beatrice; his four children, Norma Gomez and husband, Mike, Catherine Violette, Mark Violette and his wife, Pamela, and Lisa Norsworthy and husband, David; grandchildren, Erin Valenzula, Kelly Mullhern, Alexander and Blake Violette and Jeffrey Lovely, Katie, Jake and Michelle Norsworthy; five great-grandchildren; four sisters, Theresa Violette, Simonne Violette, Lorraine Gagnon and Priscilla Blier; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Carmen Couturier; and brothers, Louis, Martin and O'Neil Violette. The family extends its heartfelt thanks to the staff of Maine Veterans Home, Bangor, and Community Health and Counseling Services Hospice for their excellent and compassionate care.
Family and friends may visit 4-6 p.m. Friday, March 22, at Kiley & Foley Funeral Service, 299 Union St., Bangor. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Saturday, March 23, at St. Paul the Apostle Parish, St. Mary's Catholic Church, Ohio Street, Bangor. Burial with military honors will be at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Bangor. A reception will be held immediately afterward in the parish center. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the Activity Fund at Maine Veterans Home, 44 Hogan Road, Bangor, ME 04401.
