- ORONO - Philip F. "Buddy" Mahar, 83, died Oct. 21, 2008, at his Orono home with his loving family at his side. He was born March 23, 1925, in Orono. Buddy served with the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked a number of years at Old Town Shoe Co., before owning his own businesses, first in carpentry and then in rubbish collection, the Philip F. Mahar Co. in the Orono area. Buddy also owned several apartment buildings and delivered mail with his wife, Polly. Buddy loved his family and his pets and set a great example with his work ethic. He worked from early morning until late at night, and always went that extra mile to take care of his customers. He was a past post commander of Orono American Legion, past member of Old Town-Orono Kiwanis, and past member of the Brewer Eagles Club. Buddy was predeceased by his loving wife of 41 years, Rose Pauline "Polly" (Violette) Mahar; and his mother, Myrtle (Mahar) Wright. He is survived by his daughter and her husband, Kim and Richard Oakes of Orono; three grandchildren, Philip Smith, Stephanie Smith and Brandon Oakes of Orono; other family members, Lloyd and Sheri Smith of Veazie, Garrett Wilkin of New Jersey, Greg and Julie Miller of Old Town and Sylvia Violette of Eddington; several nieces and nephews; and his cat, "Trampy." Buddy's family and friends will hold onto many fond memories of his feisty temper and soft heart. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24, at Brookings-Smith, LaBeau Chapel, 72 Main St., Orono. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Orono, with the Rev. Wilfred Labbe, celebrant. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery, Orono.
