28 Feb. 1903
Flambeau, Wis.
Mrs. John Violette passed away from this earth Monday eve, she has been a great sufferer for the past five years. A year ago the doctors told her there was no hopes of recovery as a cancer was rapidly doing its deadly work. She leaves a devoted husband, a son and two daughters, and many relatives and friends to mourn her sad demise. The funeral will take place at two o'clock Thursday afternoon at the Catholic cemetery. The bereaved ones have the heart-felt sympathy of the entire community.
Mrs. Ludger Labarge of Ladysmith came down last Thursday to the bedside of her dying sister, Mrs. Anna Violette.
Miss Virginia Violette came from Chippewa Friday with her Uncle Israel Ferron who went to bring her to see her mother, who is seriously ill.

James Joseph Violette
ST. IGNATIUS - James Joseph Violette, 91, of St. Ignatius, passed away Thursday, March 10, 2005, of natural causes at Millpond Assisted Living in St. Ignatius.
Jim was born July 23, 1913, in Deer Lodge, the son of Edmond and Mabel (Barnden) Violette. He grew up and attended school in Deer Lodge. After he graduated from high school, the family moved to St. Ignatius and he worked on the family ranch.
He met Gladys English, who lived on a neighboring farm, and they were married in November 1937. For 68 years they never left each other's side and had a love affair that never dimmed.
Jim's first job was in the Flathead Mine outside of Niarada. There he built their first house from railroad ties, roofed with sod, and handcrafted their furniture. After the nine years, they returned to the ranch on Post Creek and moved into a former stage stop that they remodeled and lived in for the rest of their lives.
During World War II, Jim worked in Oregon at the shipyards as a welder. In 1962 he began work for the University of Montana as night watchman. He moved to mechanic in the motor pool and ran that until he retired in 1975. Jim's legacy set the bar to live a deliberate, simple, self-sufficient life. Jim and Gladys proudly maintained and shared the bounty of their renowned, perfect, weedless garden with family and friends. A 60-pound hubbard squash was not uncommon. Jim was a talented, celebrated mechanic who was seldom paid, but always appreciated for his generosity. When machine parts were unavailable, he would manufacture what was needed. Jim was on a competition sharpshooter team. Additionally, as an avid hunter, he fed his family from hunting trips into the Bob Marshall Wilderness as well as his favorite hunting areas in the Little Thompson. He belonged to a flying club and enjoyed flying a Piper Cub into Schaefer Meadows to fish. Committed to his community, he helped organize a Civil Air Patrol and participated as a ham radio operator, taught hunter safety and was a rural volunteer firefighter. Finally, Jim and Gladys' kitchen was the centerpiece for their weekend pinochle gathering, where they warmly welcomed their dear friends. For all of these memories, Jim's smile and creativity will be missed.
Survivors include Jim's loving wife Gladys; brother Edmond Violette and wife Gloria of Boulder, Colo.; two sons, Bill and wife Jenny of Missoula, and Glenn and wife Patricia McLaughlin of Whitefish; daughter Betty of Bigfork; grandchildren, Mike and wife Cheryl and their children Max and Emily, Kris Violette of Missoula, Porter Dassenko and wife Anita of Belgrade and great-granddaughters Bridget and Natasha Dassenko; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Cremation has taken place.

Electrical engineer who built radars around the world
Edmond Joseph Violette's (Ed) memorial service will take place on September 25, 2021 outdoors at Greenwood & Myers Mortuary in Boulder. He passed away on August 12, 2021 at the age of 90 in Missoula, Montana. He was the youngest of five children. He had three brothers Sherman, Glenn and Jim and his sister Iris. He married Gloria Johnson in Polson in 1950 starting a 66-year adventure. He moved to Boulder, CO in 1955 and was one of the first engineers hired into the newly built laboratories of the National Bureau of Standards (now NIST). Ed was born in Deer Lodge on September 25, 1930. He spent his youngest years in Deer Lodge and Post Creek, Montana eventually ending up in Polson where he attended high school. He was a dedicated athlete playing football, basketball, track and golf. The rumor was that he never let classes get in the way of a pickup basketball game or an afternoon of golf. When his children got a look at his High School Yearbook, his Senior Picture was accompanied by the notation - "He was rarely found in study hall, but often located in the gym or on the field." He went on to participate in Football and Track at Montana State University and, despite his attention to sports, he graduated with a BS in Electrical Engineering. He served in the Air Force where he applied his degree to research on high-frequency radio communications and the new field of computer-to-computer data transfer. After the Air Force, he applied these skills at the National Bureau of Standards (now NIST). He finished his career with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) overseeing the installation of communications equipment at research stations around the Pacific. He would let his wife (Gloria) and children (Susan, Lynee, Dan and Joseph) know that he was off to some exotic location to help build a NOAA weather station. It might be Peru, Chile, Guam, Fiji, Samoa, the Marshall Islands, or the Aleutians - he was a million-mile frequent flier before that was a thing. After the children had grown, his wife Gloria would often accompany him on these months-long work trips to the far reaches of the Pacific - occasionally living in tents or in the village closest to the research site. He was a lifelong participant in sports - a fast-pitch softball pitcher on a Colorado State Champion team, and he helped organize teams to play football, basketball and softball in city leagues. He started playing tennis in his thirties, and went on to earn top 5 state rankings in the senior divisions. He supported tennis in Boulder serving on the Board of the Boulder Tennis Association, and he was a member of the Rocky Mountain Tennis Center for over 30 years. Upon retirement, he built a summer house on Flathead Lake just outside of Polson, MT doing most of the construction himself. He and Gloria used this house as a base of operations for adventures on the lake and in the mountains with their children and grandchildren. He is survived by daughters Susan and Lynee, and his son Daniel who are grateful for his gracious spirit and his example of a life lived in full.Edmond Gloria Marie Johnson 7 Oct 1950Polson, MT.
