AUGUSTA - Richard R. Violette, 83, passed away with his family by his side on Saturday, Nov. 9, 2013, at the newly opened Alfond Center for Health in Augusta. He was born April 3, 1930, in Augusta, the son of Frank and Lena (Shaw) Violette.

Richard attended Augusta schools. He married Rachel R. Dostie in 1950. He was a veteran who served in the Army, stationed in Germany during the Korean War. Richard worked at Bates Manufacturing, then worked many years for the state of Maine as a carpenter foreman, retiring in 1987. He then started North Augusta Lawn and Garden and built Capital City Golf Course, retiring again in 2002.

He was a communicant of St. Augustine Church in Augusta, a member of the Benevolent Order of the Elks and a member of the ½ Century Club of Le Club Calumet. One of his favorite things to do was to play cards with his Monday night group at the Le Club Calumet. Richard loved snowmobiling and fishing at his camp in Rangeley. His true passion was inventing. Richard was always figuring out how to make things better and easier. He holds patents for a shoe with retractable spikes and an adjustable trailer hitch and leaves us with many ideas to pursue.
