Having been offered $200 to enlist, Raymond Jean walked from Ft. Kent, ME to Houlton, ME where he was issued a uniforn then marched to Bangor, ME where he boarded a train to Portland, ME. He was enrolled on August 20, 1862 in Company B, 20th Maine Infantry Regiment.
After virtually no training, he fought under the command of General Pope in the Second Battle of Bull Run on August 29, 1862 at Manassas, Virginia. Raymond Jean also served under the command of General Chamberlain and General Grant. On the 1st of April, 1865 he was wounded in the elbow of his right arm at the battle at Hatcher's Run at Five Forks, Virginia. On April 9th he witnessed the surrender of General Lee at the Appomattox Court House. Later that day he was taken to Washington for treatment of his wound. He was selected to walk in President Lincoln's funeral procession.
He received his discharge on 27 June , 1865. Whereupon he left by train to Bangor, Maine, and from there walked to Fort Kent, Maine a distance of about 200 miles.
