  WWII Veteran Benny Joseph Violette, 90, of 52 Rideout Avenue, Lewiston, died Wednesday, May 24, 2017, at his home, surrounded by his family. Born in Presque Isle on October 20, 1926, he was the son of Francois and Albina (L'Italien) Violette.Educated in Presque Isle and Lewiston schools, he was a veteran of World War II. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the age of 17 and was an electrician's mate on the aircraft carrier USS Boxer, of which he was a proud plank owner. Then Benny was assigned to a troop transport ship as an Electrician's mate where he became the movie projectionist. He was honorably discharged in 1946.On April 10, 1948, he married the love of his life, Aline J. Bell.Benny worked as a machinist at the Bates Mill, the Hill Mill, the Continental Mill and at Bell Farms for many years, retiring early for health reasons in the mid-1970's.He was a member of the Lewiston Social Club, the Lewiston Elks Lodge No. 371, the American Legion, and Le Montagnard Club.He greatly enjoyed wood working, gardening and "bargain shopping" at Mardens. With his bright blue eyes, killer smile and outgoing personality, Benny earned himself many, many friends.Benny was a member of Holy Family Church, Prince of Peace Parish.He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Aline Bell of Lewiston; two sons, Paul and his wife, Fonda (Higgins) Violette, of Jayette, and Marc Violette of York; and three daughters, Denise Violette and partner, Marla Sax, of Saco, Joline and husband, Douglas Edwards, of Saco, and Nancy and husband, Ed Bush, of Lisbon Falls; eight grandchildren, Katie Cormier, Mary Snow, Debbie Ricker, Cody Violette, Kara Violette, Connor Violette, Jack Gilman and Grant Gilman; and three great-grandchildren, Hunter Cormier, Kelton Ricker and Lachian Ricker; two sisters, Pauline Bussiere and Christine Hopkins; and many nieces and nephews.Benny is predeceased by two sisters, Muriel Turgeon and Loula Bedell; and three brothers, Raymond, Angelo and Phillip.Condolences and a video tribute may be found online at: www.albert-burpee.comInterment at a later date, Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery.
