In 1889 Michael stowed away on the ship Stormy Petre l, which was bound for Dalhousie and Campbellton, NB. Giving up his quest to find his sister Catherine who was in St. Louis, MIssouri. Michael hired on to work at the MacDougal farm in Matapedia. There he met a Mr. Lawler, who recommended him to the Restigoushe Salmon Club. There he worked as a handyman, and later a fishing guide. There he met and married Isabella (Bella) MacDonald who was a cook.
